BOOZE BATTLES; WHAT TO CHOOSE

With the Aussie Rules Grand Final weekend JUST around the corner – *cough* Carn West Coast *cough* or even just a long weekend for some Eastern States, you are guaranteed to have a beverage in hand. I did a little bit of research on which alcohol is the best for us (or shall I say better than the rest), and the pro’s and con’s of red, white, champas and beer.

RED WINE

Pro’s – we all know that red wine is packed with antioxidants; resveratrol and flavonoids. These antioxidants are good for your heart health and for lowering choleserol. Bonus! Red Wine is also very low in fructose making it Sarah Wilson’s, author ‘I Quit Sugar’ drink of choice.

Con’s – You mean the deliciously attractive red wine stain you get on your mouth isn’t attractive? Well no not quite although if you keep your mouth closed it might give you that deep purple Revlon colour you have been wanting. That aside you need to drink A LOT of red wine to benefit enough from the antioxidants however in doing so you will counteract any of the benefits by most likely passing out and causing a lot of liver damage.

WHITE WINE

Pro’s – so what about Red wines ‘cleaner’ friend white wine? Other than the perfect partner for a white outfit, white wine has been proven to have health benefits for your lungs and lung tissue.

Con’s – It is far more acidic than the red variety and therefore not fantastic for your chompas (teeth). White wine also contains the same amount of calories as red sans the heart healthy antioxidants so it is therefore less nutritious.

CHAMPAGNE

Pro’s – a glass of bubbly can actually have the same heart and health benefits as red wine minus the calories. This is because it’s made from red, as well as white, grapes, and therefore contains most resveratrol. Champagne also contains polyphenol antioxidants, which further protects the heart in its own way. If you are concerned about calorie content in alcohol, bubbles might be the drink for you. Due to the smaller glass/serving size you can sip away the same amount of drinks as your wine drinking friends yet consuming far less, which is good for your health and sobriety.

Con’s – nice champagne comes with a pretty hefty price tag which can sometimes make you grab the cheaper ‘on special’ variety. Uhhh ohh! Unfortunate for some, a glass of bubbles can also cause severe migranes.

BEER

Pro’s – the nutritional value of beer exceeds that of wine. The values of protein, fiber, B vitamins, folate and niacin found in beer make it more like food. Beer has also been found to increase your bone density and be beneficial to your skin. Apparently the hops in beer have also been proven to reduce obesity – but that was tested on mice so take it with a pinch of salt. It does however contain next to no sugar and fructose.

Con’s – excessive amounts of beer can lead to liver damage and pack a large calorie punch. It is also very high in carbohydrates. Oh and beer guts aren’t sexy!

Overall ??

The truth is any type of alcohol can offer life-extending benefits. When it comes to which alcoholic beverage to order – neither is healthier than the other. It isn’t the type of alcohol but more the frequency and quantity when reaping benefits.

Although many people suggest that drinking a glass of red is like drinking to your health, a pint of beer can be the same. While the calories can add up, the alcohol content is lower in beer meaning you can have more casual afternoon brewskies without falling over. At the end of the day order what you enjoy more – because alcohol is to be enjoyed not abused.

NEW MONTH NEW GOALS NEW CHANGE

Who loves a clean slate? (Insert little girl emoji with her hand in the air!!) I am all about the Monday fresh start each week especially after indulgent and eventful weekends. Then there are the new months and even the new seasons. It is starting to feel like a lot of things in my life are new at the moment. New country, new house, new non job, new local coffee spot… new life really. Continue reading “NEW MONTH NEW GOALS NEW CHANGE”

EATING HEALTHY WHILST TRAVELING

So I am lying on a pebble beach sunning my backside with my toes just touching the lapping water. I am in Kotor, Montenegro without a care in the world. Nowhere to be. Nothing to be done (we do have a load of washing in our apartment going on at the moment… thanks to Rob) and no one to attend to. It has been 2 weeks since we packed up our lives into 16kg and lugged it to our backs flying half way across the world. Continue reading “EATING HEALTHY WHILST TRAVELING”

2015; PART TWO

WOW!! Can you believe that it is officially the second half of the year. A whole 6 months has been since 2015 kicked off with a bang. I know the old saying always goes, time flies when you are having fun but seriously fun or not (definitely fun) the days are going waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too fast and it is the weekend before I can blink. No complaints but now that we are embarking on the second half of the year I can t help but feel a little eeeek of panic!! I am loving my life at the moment and finding that absolute balance between work and play. I have definitely fallen off the band wagon with my usual routine since moving house 2 weeks ago and so I am working on that. Life is all about falling off and getting back on. So here’s to the next 6 months of 2015. Let’s make it  a goodie!

There are;

21 weeks until summer

176 days until Christmas

8 weeks left of winter

182 days until 2016

Time to get that coffee, sweet treat and weekly planner out and get planning!!!

Ok so with that all said. What have you achieved over the last 6 months? Are you proud of yourself ? Do you look back with regret or disappointment? Did you expect too much of yourself? Did you set yourself realistic goals? Or more importantly did you stick to them?

My goals coming into the new year of 2015 were – To save money. To get hot! and to become a kick ass architect with a killer blog…. hmmmmmm!!! What do you want to get out of the next half of the year?? Because now is your chance. There is nothing more exciting then setting yourself new challenges and starting FRESH! new months are fab for this but new half years are even better!!!

My challenges and goals for the next 6 months? Ok here goes;

PERSONAL; to love myself for who I am. AND practice yoga and meditation. It is about time I get that head stand sorted and take some deep self loving breaths.

FITNESS; to be able to do 10 chin ups unassisted. This has always been a goal of mine (nothing more badass than a chick who can do chins) but considering I have never really attempted them nor done anything to get better at them I’m not surprised by my skill or lack of.

HEALTH; to banish ALL guilt and negative relationships I have with food. That’s right – eat a whole damn donut with a smile on my face. Guilt and food are two things that should NOT be associated. Life is too short to be strict on yourself and ‘hate’ yourself for what you eat. Food is there to nourish you and is way too good for a bad rep.

MONEY; this is a difficult one for me because some days I just want to save save save and other days I am like … $456 on gym gear.. yuh ha!! BUT whilst I am not saving for a house deposit or putting my money into shares, I want to conserve my money and spend it on things that will make me wiser and add value to my life…not materialistic value. Like travel! Travel is the only thing that you can spend money on that will make you richer…? that’s the famous quote right…

CAREER; do something different! I love my architecture lifestyle and job BUT I am ready for a little step back from the 9-5 desk. I want to experience working in the health and fitness industry because this is a clear passion of mine. I want to help people become the best version of themselves. I want a reason to JUMP out of bed at the crack of dawn and smile! I am not sure what exactly I need to do this but I cant wait to start exploring and find out. I think it will start with a big ass coffee!!!

LOVE; Get engaged! haha just kidding there is no rush for that. BUT I am honestly more happy and in love than ever so if I can stay this way … BRING IT ON! More adventures and gelato eating in Rome please!

Now your turn! Write them down and stash them away somewhere to pull out in 6 months time. Be realistic and create the life you WANT to live.

WINTER SNACKS COVERED

So its winter in Australia which means two things; our bodies go into hungry bear hibernation mode right? and the cold weather just makes us want to eat pasta, pizza and pies all day long. There is no hiding the fact that our appetites increase as the temperature decreases and we start to crave comfort foods. Therefore instead of going for an evening walk after work or hitting the gym early in the morning we chose to reside to the couch with something warm. No judge!! BEST AVO SMASH IN CANBERRA

I am that predictable girl who always scans the menu for some plain and boring (as if) avocado smash on toast. Of course with some poached eggs, some greenery and Persian feta you cannot go wrong. Oh and smoked salmon too is always a good final touch. I have found my top 10 breakfast places in Canberra and put their smashed avocado and toast specialties to the test. Here are my reviews. Hope I don’t offend anyone – I am a tough critic… especially when it comes to soggy toast or hard eggs!! #RAGE Continue reading “BEST AVO SMASH IN CANBERRA”

THE HAIRY TRUTH

So for those who know me well, know that I somewhat skimped out on the ‘growing hair’ part of the pregnancy whilst I was being created. AND you would also know that I twizzle my hair very rapidly when it is either washed and straight (who doesn’t love playing with fresh silky hair?) or in the evenings when I am exhausted (like pretty much every night). It wasn’t until I returned home after being away for a year that my mum was in total shock about my hair, or should I say lack of, and took me straight to the health food store to get something STAT!!! EGGS; ALL THAT THEY ARE CRACKED UP TO BE?

Eggs are a very important part of a healthy lifestyle and one of the most nutritious foods on the planet. They are a great source of healthy fats and protein which keep you feeling full. They are also super easy to cook, relatively inexpensive and easy to transport!! Continue reading “EGGS; ALL THAT THEY ARE CRACKED UP TO BE?”

CHOCOLATE; THE HEALTHY CHOICE

Now if there is one thing NO girls should deny themselves of no matter what … it is chocolate. Be it a little nibble after dinner, a hot choc pick me up in the arvo or a chocolate thick shake for breakfast (yep chocolate for breakfast) – there is always a time and place for chocolate.

“Eating small amounts of dark chocolate can be good for your health. Chocolate comes from a plant — the bean of the cacao tree — and, like certain teas, wine and many fruits and vegetables, it boasts a high concentration of antioxidant compounds called “flavonoids,” which can help prevent heart disease and protect against cancer” – Live Strong

I WENT PALEO AND NOW I HATE EVERYTHING

Dieting in general can be tough, not to mention going fully Paleo and cutting out carbs, dairy and gluten altogether. Blogger Geraldine DeRuiter of The Everywhereist describes her experience going Paleo and why this nutritional approach didn’t exactly work out for her. Honestly one of the funniest things I have read in a while – a must read for a laugh! Continue reading “I WENT PALEO AND NOW I HATE EVERYTHING”
